Not all cheats are created equal. The method used to interact with the game determines how powerful, how risky, and how detectable the cheat is. There are three main categories: internal, external, and DMA (hardware-based).

Internal Cheats

Internal cheats inject code directly into the game's process. This gives them full access to the game's data and functions, making them extremely powerful — they can modify nearly anything. However, because they live inside the game, anti-cheat software has a much easier time detecting them.

Think of it as sneaking into a building and working from inside. You can do a lot, but security cameras (anti-cheat) are everywhere.

External Cheats

External cheats run as separate programs on the same computer. They read the game's memory from the outside without injecting code into the game process. This makes them harder to detect than internal cheats, but anti-cheat systems have gotten increasingly good at spotting external memory access.

This is like watching the building through the windows from outside. Safer than being inside, but someone might still notice you peeking.

DMA (Hardware-Based) Cheats

DMA cheats take things to another level entirely. They use a physical PCIe card to read the game's memory from a completely separate computer. Nothing runs on the gaming PC — no injected code, no external program, nothing for anti-cheat to find.

This is like watching the building via a hidden security camera in another city. Nobody inside the building knows you exist.
